慣用語、諺語與比喻的精通

🎯 這一課你會學會

C1 教過 idiom 要「懂得多、用得省」。C2 再加兩類母語者語言的紋理:binomials(成對詞:by and large、sooner or later)與 proverbs / similes(諺語與明喻:as good as gold)。重點依然是——大量聽懂、精準少用、看準場合。C2 的高手不是講最多俗語的人,是每一個都用得剛剛好的人。

💬 先聽一段對話

Mia: How's the restructure going?（重組進行得如何?) Ken: By and large, smoothly. A few hiccups here and there.（大致上順利。這裡那裡有些小狀況。) Mia: Sooner or later you'll need more staff.（你遲早需要更多人手。) Ken: True. But I'd rather be safe than sorry.（沒錯。但我寧願謹慎也不要後悔。) Mia: Wise. Slow and steady wins the race.（明智。慢而穩者勝。)

🔑 三類「語言紋理」

• Binomials(成對詞,固定順序):by and large、sooner or later、safe and sound、pros and cons、give and take。
• Similes(明喻,as … as …):as good as gold、as easy as pie、as clear as day。
• Proverbs(諺語):Better safe than sorry、Slow and steady wins the race、Actions speak louder than words。

🧩 文法點:紋理與分寸

① Binomials(成對詞——順序固定,別調換):

• by and large（大致上)、sooner or later（遲早)、safe and sound（平安無事)、give and take（互相讓步)、back and forth（來回)、odds and ends（零碎雜物)、pros and cons（利弊)。
• 順序是固定的:✅ safe and sound ❌ sound and safe;✅ pros and cons ❌ cons and pros。
• 好處:一個成對詞頂一串解釋,精簡道地。

② Similes(明喻,可親可玩):

• 固定比喻:as good as gold（乖巧)、as light as a feather（很輕)、as clear as day（一清二楚)、as cool as a cucumber（泰然自若)。
• 有些已成陳腔(cliché),適度用、別堆;C2 更常改造或反用製造效果("as clear as mud" = 一點都不清楚,反諷)。

③ Proverbs(諺語——整句智慧,慎用):

• Better safe than sorry / Actions speak louder than words / Don't count your chickens (before they hatch) / The grass is always greener…。
• 諺語份量重、易顯說教——正式寫作少用,口語點到為止;用半句、對方自然補全(…the grass is always greener.)反而高明。

④ 分寸(C2 的真本事):

• 聽懂 > 會用:C2 首先要能即時聽懂這些紋理,不被繞暈。
• 少即是好:一段一兩個到位的;連珠炮的俗語聽起來不自然、甚至可疑。
• 看場合:學術/正式報告幾乎不用;口語、專欄、演說可點綴。
• 確定意思與順序再用:記半套 = 露餡。

⑤ 中文母語者常犯:

• 直譯中文成語/諺語(多半沒人懂)→ 用英語既有的或字面說法。
• 成對詞順序調換(sound and safe)。
• 諺語硬塞進正式文件、或一次講太多俗語 → 場合與分寸都失準。

🗣️ 發音提醒

• 成對詞當一個節奏塊、重音在兩端:BY and LARGE、PROS and CONS、SAFE and SOUND。
• 中間的 and 弱讀成「ən」:safe-ən-sound、back-ən-forth。
• 諺語語氣放輕、帶點會心——太用力會顯得說教。

✍️ 開口練習

練習 1:填成對詞。

• 大致上還好。 → By and large, it's fine.
• 他平安到家了。 → He got home safe and sound.

練習 2:判斷場合——正式報告該用諺語嗎?

一份分析報告要說「凡事有利有弊」→ 用字面:"Every option has advantages and disadvantages."(避免諺語堆疊)

練習 3:用一個成對詞或明喻講你手上的事。
