倒裝條件與 but for
Were I… / Had I known / Should you…、If it weren’t for / But for
倒裝條件與 but for
把條件句講得正式、有文氣:不用 if,改用倒裝——"Were I you, I'd wait."「Had I known, I'd have called.」以及用 but for / if it weren't for 講「要不是…」。
Mia: I might take the job in Berlin.(我可能會接柏林那份工作。) Ken: Were I in your position, I'd think hard about it.(換作是我,我會好好想想。) Mia: Had I known earlier, I'd have prepared better.(早知道我會準備得更好。) Ken: But for your German, it'd be impossible anyway.(要不是你會德語,反正也不可能。) Mia: True. Should you hear of anything, let me know.(真的。
- Were + 主詞 …(= If … were):Were I rich, I'd travel.
- Had + 主詞 + PP …(= If … had done):Had she asked, I'd have helped.
- Should + 主詞 …(= If … should,萬一):Should it rain, we'll move inside.
|---|---|
| If I were you… | Were I you… |
| If I had known… | Had I known… |
| If you should need help… | Should you need help… |
- 只有 were / had / should 這三種能這樣倒裝;沒有 if,也沒有 do/does/did。
- If it had not rained… → Had it not rained…(❌ Hadn't it rained…——倒裝條件的否定要 not 分開放)
③ But for / If it weren't for / If it hadn't been for(要不是…):
- But for your help, I'd have failed.(要不是你幫忙,我早就失敗了。)
- If it weren't for the rain, we'd go.(要不是下雨,我們就去。
- If it hadn't been for her, we'd have lost.(要不是她,我們早輸了。
- ❌ Were I would be you → ✅ Were I you, I'd …(主句才有 would)
- ❌ Had I have known → ✅ Had I known(had + 過去分詞,別多一個 have)
- Should you… Should you need me, call.
|---|---|---|---|
| position | /pəˈzɪʃən/ | 處境、職位 | Were I in your position… |
| impossible | /ɪmˈpɑsəbəl/ | 不可能 | It'd be impossible. |
| prepare | /prɪˈpɛr/ | 準備 | I'd have prepared better. |
| otherwise | /ˈʌðɚˌwaɪz/ | 否則 | I left early; otherwise I'd have missed it. |
| fail | /fel/ | 失敗 | But for you, I'd have failed. |
- Were I 連讀「wər-aɪ」;Had I 「hæ-daɪ」;Should you「ʃʊ-dʒu」——一氣呵成才自然。
- 這類句子語調偏平穩、正式,重音落在關鍵字(Were / Had / But for)。
- But for 的 for 輕讀,別重踩。
- If I were the boss, I'd change it. → Were I the boss, I'd change it.
- If they had told me, I'd have come. → Had they told me, I'd have come.
But for / If it weren't for 造句。
→ But for your advice, I'd have made a mistake.
練習 3:用 Should you…
Should you _, feel free to _.
- 倒裝條件(正式、無 if):Were I… / Had I known… / Should you…;否定用 not 分開放。
- But for + 名詞 / If it weren't for / If it hadn't been for = 要不是…。
(I suggest that he be…)。
