may well / might (just) as well / would(固執或習慣)/ needn’t have 深化
情態動詞到了 C1,玩的是細膩差別:may well(很可能)、might (just) as well(不如就…)、would(過去的習慣或「就是硬要」的固執)、以及 needn't have done vs couldn't have done 的語氣。
Ken: The 5 o'clock train's cancelled.(五點的火車取消了。) Mia: Then we might as well get coffee while we wait.(那我們不如趁等的時候喝杯咖啡。) Ken: Good idea. The next one may well be packed, though.(好主意。 Mia: Typical. Ken would leave booking till the last minute.(typical。 Ken: Hey — I needn't have rushed this morning, then!(喂——那我今早根本不必趕嘛!)
- may/might well + 原形:很可能(強一點的推測)。
- might (just) as well + 原形:(既然沒更好選擇)不如就…。
- needn't have + PP:白做了(做了但不必);對照 didn't need to(本來就不必,多半沒做)。
① may / might well(很可能,比單純 may 更肯定一點):
- She may well be right.(她很可能是對的。)
- It might well rain later.(等下很可能會下雨。)
② might (just) as well(不如就…,帶「反正沒差/沒更好選擇」的口吻):
- No one's here. We might as well go home.(沒人在。
- If you're paying anyway, you might just as well buy the bigger one.(反正都要付,不如買大的。)
③ would(兩種進階用法):
- 過去的習慣(= used to,只用於動作,不用於狀態):As a kid, I would spend hours reading.(小時候我會花好幾小時看書。)
- ⚠ 狀態不用 would:❌ I would have a bike. ✅ I used to have a bike.
- 帶批評的「就是硬要」(重讀 would):He would say that, wouldn't he?(他當然會這樣講啊——就是他那種人。)
④ needn't have done vs didn't need to do(B2 的深化):
- needn't have done:做了,但其實不必 → 白做/白擔心。You needn't have cooked — we ate already.
- didn't need to do:不必,(通常)就沒做。I didn't need to buy milk, so I didn't.
- 對照 couldn't have done:不可能做過(推測過去否定):He couldn't have stolen it — he was with me.
- would 講過去習慣不能用於狀態(have/be/like/know 等)→ 用 used to。
- may well ≠ 也許好:well 是加強可能性。
- needn't have(白做)別跟 didn't need to(本來不必)混。
|---|---|---|---|
| cancel | /ˈkænsəl/ | 取消 | The train was cancelled. |
| packed | /pækt/ | 擠滿的 | The train was packed. |
| rush | /rʌʃ/ | 趕、匆忙 | I rushed for nothing. |
| typical | /ˈtɪpɪkəl/ | 一如往常 | Typical of him. |
| bother | /ˈbɑðɚ/ | 費事 | You needn't have bothered. |
- may well / might well 的 well 輕帶過,不要重踩成「好」。
- might as well 常連讀「maɪ-təz-wɛl」。
- 表批評的 would 要重讀:He WOULD say that.——語氣就出來了。
練習 1:選 may well / might as well。
→ We might as well go for a walk.
→ He may well be home already.
When I was young, I would _.
練習 3:needn't have 還是 didn't need to?
→ You needn't have made dinner.
- may/might well=很可能;might (just) as well=不如就…;would=過去習慣(動作)或批評式「就是硬要」。
- needn't have done=白做了;didn't need to=本來不必(多半沒做)。
